Wagering May 13, 2003
The South Carolina state legislature is expected to begin the process
of legalizing pari-mutuel wagering within the state.
South Carolina already plays host to many Thoroughbreds in training,
and a legalization of wagering could pave the way for new tracks top open
in the state. There already are various training facilities in Aiken,
Camden, Cedar Swamp, Charleston, and Elloree.
The process is expected to take a long time and might not be completed
until 2005. Following a two-thirds approval by both the South Carolina
House and Senate, a majority of voters must approve the amendment to the
constitution, and then the General Assembly must again approve the ratification
to the state constitution.
