Millionaire May Be In Fort White May 13, 2003 Someone in Columbia County could soon be wealthier ... by millions. According to the Florida Lottery, three tickets sold matched all six numbers in Saturday's Lotto drawing for a $20 million jackpot. Winning tickets with the numbers 10-20-31-33-34-48 were bought in Haines City, Tampa and Fort White. But until winners come forward, there is no way of telling if that ticket was purchased by an area resident or just someone passing through. A lottery official said Monday the local winning ticket was sold at S&S Food Store off U.S. 27 North in downtown Fort White. Julie Daugherty, a cashier at the store, said she wasn't aware of when or to whom the ticket had been sold, only that it was purchased in Fort White. "I don't know, no one's told me anything," she said. "But it's cool isn't it?" Daugherty did say she had heard someone from Lake City bought the ticket, "but that doesn't mean it's true." "It could be gossip," she added. Greg Whitson, store manager, said the Fort White doesn't sell an overly high volume of Lotto tickets and also was unaware of when the winning one was purchased. Daugherty also said - because of its location - the store often serves folks from out of town. "With the river, on the weekends there are a lot of people not from here," she said. Regardless, the winning ticket-holder has some choices to make. "It (the jackpot) would be split three ways," a lottery official said. "If that person chooses to take a lump sum, they would get $3,791,583. That is before taxes. If they chose the 30-year annuity it would come out to $6.6 million over that period of time. That would be like $222,000 per year for 30 years (minus taxes)." Because the jackpot is more than $250,000, he said winners must claim their prize at the Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee. The official said lottery winners have 180 days to redeem tickets, but only 60 days if they want the lump sum. "If they wait past that," he said. "They would automatically get the annuity." He said people usually call first before coming to the office in person and "at that time, they are advised to seek legal and financial advice." But people cannot be formally declared the winners until a ticket is physically produced. "It's not considered official until they come into our office and
we take at look at their ticket," he said. "Because we have
been fooled before." The official said he expected at least one of
the winners to come forward with the "next couple of days" and
the "last two within the next week or so."
