Barbour Gets Endorsement, Despite Tie To Gambling Company May 14, 2003
The leader of the antigambling American Family Association has endorsed Republican Haley Barbour for governor of Mississippi, even though Barbour's Washington lobbying firm represented a Louisiana company working with an Indian tribe to build casinos.
In a recent open letter, the Rev. Donald Wildmon, founder of the Tupelo-based AFA, said he and Barbour have discussed issues such as abortion, crime, drug abuse, gambling and "special rights for homosexuals."
"Haley and I will not agree 100 percent on all issues. I doubt if there is any candidate that we would agree with 100 percent. But we do agree on issues of vital importance," Wildmon wrote. Wildmon's letter was not on AFA stationery.
Records on a U.S. Senate Web site show Machal Inc. of Alexandria, La., paid Barbour's lobbying firm - about $540,000 in 2001 and 2002. Machal, a commercial development company, hired Barbour's firm to lobby the Bureau of Indian Affairs on "land in trust issues related to the Jena Band of Choctaws," records show.
In 2001 and 2002, the Louisiana-based Jena Band of Choctaws tried to place land in public trust to establish a casino in Tishomingo County, Miss.Barbour's campaign spokesman said the firm did not help in that effort. Federal law allows Indian tribes to operate casino in states where gambling is legal.
Tishomingo County residents voted against the proposed casino in a nonbinding referendum. Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove also opposed the effort, saying he would not sign the required pact with the Indian tribe to allow casino gambling in northeast Mississippi.
Barbour campaign spokesman Quinton Dickerson said Barbour, Griffith & Rogers represented Machal in trying to place a casino in Louisiana. Dickerson said when the Louisiana company wanted to develop a casino in Mississippi, Barbour, Griffith & Rogers refused that business.
"There's no place in Mississippi that wants casino gambling that doesn't already have it," Dickerson said. Wildmon said he felt comfortable endorsing Barbour because the gubernatorial candidate said he opposed expanding gambling in Mississippi.
Barbour's lobbying firm has represented Powerhouse Technologies, an Atlanta-based firm that supplies lottery games and electronic slot machines. Dickerson said Barbour's firm was hired to help ensure Powerhouse maintained its contracts to manage the lotteries in Florida and Pennsylvania.
In 2002, records show Barbour's firm received $80,000 for representing the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation. Dickerson said the firm was helping the tribe obtain federal recognition. A March 2000 issue of Casino News said the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe was trying to obtain federal recognition so it could open a casino with Donald Trump.
Madison attorney Mitch Tyner, who faces Barbour in the Aug.5 Republican
primary, already has criticized Barbour on social issues, including gambling.
Tyner said he was surprised to learn Wildmon had endorsed Barbour.
